Learn more about the fifth pillar of the Bioclear Method - Rockstar Polishing.

We are now onto the fifth and final pillar of the Bioclear Method: the Rockstar Polish.

How do we ensure that your restorations will stay amazing over the years? Well, we do that with the Rockstar Polish. What exactly is it? To start with, it is the smoothest and most impressive polish you have ever seen. It’s funny; doctors who go through our training will often comment on that fact. And studies have shown that when combined with 3M Filtek Supreme Ultra Restorative—a true nanofill composite—it holds the polish the longest of any type of composite.

What does the Rockstar Polish do?

It brings the tooth alive! Prior to the polish, the composite surface is more opaque. And remember, since Bioclear Restorations are monolithic, there are no air bubbles created like there is with hand manipulation and therefore a Bioclear restoration when highly polished will slightly decrease in value which gives the material a translucency that is natural looking.

What’s more, the high polish reduces stain potential and reduces plaque retention, so there are esthetic and health benefits essential to a great polish.

The patient satisfaction with a rock-star polish is universal. Patients love it and praise it. It is going to be the smoothest tooth in their mouth with a polish that will look good for years to come.

So what is needed, and what are the steps to achieve a rockstar polish?

Surface preparation is always the key in any good polish. After using diamond burrs to initially remove excess composite, we use 3M Soflex Coarse Discs to create the final shape and surface texture. By using a disc that is worn and softened we will show you how to remove all deep diamond burr scratches. What you should have then is a uniform matte surface appearance and texture.

Once you have that matte surface, you are ready for the next step, which is to use our Bioclear Magic Mix paste. The Magic Mix is used with a ribbed, rubber prophy cup. Use plenty of it. The Magic Mix contains varying sizes of pumice from coarse to fine in a glycerin base.

The coarse grit pumice will soften sharp incisal edges, remove excess resin at the cervical areas, and further smooth out the surface left from the discing you did in step one.

As you continue to use the Magic Mix—without adding any more of it to the tooth—the medium and finer grits will change your surface from that matte finish to a uniform satin finish.

Once you have done this well, you are now ready for the last step.

The last step is the use of the Rockstar or RS Polisher, a diamond-impregnated cup polisher. It also comes in a point, but for most cases, the cup works best. To use the RS Polisher correctly, you will want to practice two distinct steps.

The first step using it dry, so you can see your progress, and the second step is using it under water spray.

When using it dry, the amount of pressure applied varies from light to medium, and the cup is moved more quickly all over the composite surface. You are going to achieve a high shine over the entire restoration. As you note areas that need more polish, you’ll apply a little more pressure. The entire time you are in this dry phase, you must have your assistant keep a steady stream or air or, at minimum, consistent blasts of air to keep the tooth and composite cool.

When the entire tooth is polished, you might think you are done, but the best part is yet to come.

Using the Rockstar Polisher under an air-water spray with heavy pressure will give you results that will astound you.

Using a pressure that is about double what you used for the dry phase, you now move very slowly, methodically and steadily across the composite surface like a slow machine.

Finally, you are ready to let your patient see something they have likely never seen before!
